The SIR-900 media used in the fluoride filters is a synthetic adsorbent media that is highly selective for arsenic, fluoride and lead. Arsenic and fluoride removal is sensitive to pH, preferring an acidic pH. The extremely high surface area and pore distribution gives this media the highest possible operating capacity and lowest possible leakage.  It removes metals through a combination of adsorption and chemical reaction with the media; thus the removal is not dependent on ion exchange.  

Fluoride capacity is up to 11,000 ppm (parts per million)  with effluent levels below 0.2 ppm from 10 ppm feed.  The EPA maximum limit for fluoride is 4 ppm.  Therefore, municipalities will not be adding more than 4 ppm to public drinking water - thus the feed is less than 10 ppm.  High pH and high bicarbonate levels reduce capacity for fluoride and arsenic removal -- above 100 ppm bicarbonate will result in a reduction of capacity by 50%.  Above 200 ppm the reduction is 75%.  Hovever, the capacity of this media is orders of magnitude greater than the 4 ppm maximum added fluoride.  

 The single replaceable cartridge fluoride water filters do not have the 5-stage KDF/GAC cartridge.  To filter for the many contaminants addressed by the Crystal Quest 5 stage KDF/GAC system as well as fluoride in a replaceable cartridge system, use the double and triple cartridge models.  The double cartridge filters have a replaceable 5 stage KDF/GAC cartridge, then a fluoride cartridge.  The triple cartridge filters start with a solid carbon block cartridge, then the KDF/GAC 5 stage cartridge and finally,  the fluoride cartridge.   

The sealed units do not have a separate fluoride cartridge. The KDF media in sealed standard (4 or 5 stage) Crystal Quest water filters will remove some fluoride (30 to 50 percent). In order to remove fluoride completely,  sealed fluoride filters have SIR-900 added to the 4 or 5 stage KDF/GAC filter. The sealed 5 stage filter is only available in the countertop PLUS configuration. Undersink and refrigerator sealed fluoride units are the 4 stage version.  This means there is only KDF®55 instead of KDF®55 and KDF®85.

Replaceable Cartridge Undersink Fuoride Water Filters install neatly under the sink.  Comes with attractive faucet and all necessary installation hardware.  It is easy to use and installs neatly on all standard sinks without plumbing or special tools. (Standard sinks are sinks with a section of flexible tubing. Refrigerator Ice Maker Hook Up

Neat little hook up that sends a line to your refrigerator.  All the connections are push connect, so just insert your flexible refrigerator line, or use a rigid to tubing adaptor (not provided)  to make the connection to the refrigerator.  The provided tubing connects to the output of the water filter, and the tubing provided with the faucet (included in undersink models) connects to the other end (the one shown without tubing inserted).

These 4 stage Fluoride water filters remain attractive as compact single cylinder units that have the classic 4 stage KDF/GAC filtration stages in addition to the fluoride removal media SIR-900.  The sealed refrigerator water filters are the most convenient way to add fluoride removal to a refrigerator filter, as the new refrigerator filters do not include the fluoride removal media SIR-900 or a replaceable fluoride cartridge.
